An Inspiring Good Friday

our hot cross buns

The turn out at our Good Friday worship was tremendous with over 80 persons present.  This was an encouragement for all the leaders and worship team who had worked hard to come out with a great service. We had a Litany that  was lead by Mabal Tan. Our guest singer for the evening was Tracy Gunapalan, who brought an atmosphere of serenity to the service. The whole sanctuary was so silent that we could hear the thunder outside. The messages were inspiring and moving and the congregational singing was just so good to add to the awesomeness of the evening. On the Lord’s table was the solitary white candle, signifying the Light of Christ.

We were treated to hot cross buns at the end of the service with coffee and tea. As we missed greeting one another at the beginning as the worship began in silence. Fellowship time was indeed a joy being with one another. Truly a good Good Friday.

What is Palm Sunday?

Palm crosses

Palm Sunday is one of the most important days in the Christian calendar after Christmas and Easter. Palm Sunday is the Sunday before Easter, and marks the beginning of Holy Week or sometimes called “Passion Week”  It is the week of events leading up to Jesus’ death.

The celebration of Palm Sunday originated in the Jerusalem Church, around the late fourth century. The early Palm Sunday ceremony consisted of prayers, hymns, and sermons recited by the clergy while the people walked to various holy sites throughout the city. At the final site, the place where Christ ascended into heaven, the clergy would read from the gospels concerning the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. In the early evening they would return to the city reciting: “Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord.” The children would carry palm and olive branches as the people returned through the city back to the church, where they would hold evening services.

By the fifth century, the Palm Sunday celebration had spread as far as Constantinople. Changes made in the sixth and seventh centuries resulted in two new Palm Sunday traditions – the ritual blessing of the palms, and a morning procession instead of an evening one. Adopted by the Western Church in the eighth century, the celebration received the name “Palm Sunday”.

Thus Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. The gospels record the arrival of Jesus riding into the city on a donkey, while the crowds spread their cloaks and palm branches on the street and shouted “Hosanna to the Son of David” and “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” to honor him as their long-awaited Messiah and King. This fulfills the prophecy spoken by the prophet Zechariah (Zechariah 9:9).

Today, in many main line Churches, the Palm Sunday Liturgy begins with the blessing of the palms. A procession is held followed by the Eucharist is celebrated. Palm crosses are distributed to the believers to place them in their homes.

Lent Home Meetings- Speakers

In these Lent Home meetings we have used our lay people to bring God’s message to us. The following spoke at the last 2 home meetings.

On Friday 9 March, Yoke Fong spoke on “Forgiveness at the Cross” at the home of Johnny and Mabal Ng, Country Heights in Klang.

Last Friday 16 March, Dr Sam Oommen spoke at the home of Mark & Yong Ling, Bukit Jalil.  Dr. Sam spoke in a question and answer method on the “Death on the Cross”

“Standing at the Cross”

Will you stand too

Our 2nd Lent Home meeting was held on Friday 2nd March at the home of Ben and Virgina in Taman Esplanade, Bukit Jalil. A group of members and friends were present to hear the word shared by Ms. Annam. She spoke on the theme” Standing at the Cross”  taken from John 19:23-30. She took us through the reactions, responses and reception of all those who stood at the Cross on that first Good Friday. After the message, a short discussion was held in 3 groups focusing on what the cross means to each one.

This was good for all in preparation of our Extended Prayer Night and for Passion Week.

The Season of Lent

The Sanctuary in Lent

Purple is the colour for this season of Lent and 5 purples candles and a white one were lit and placed in church beginning at the Ash Wednesday Service. The Candles help us to focus and participate as the Lord draws close to the Cross at Calvary. As each week goes by in Lent, one of the candle is extinguished. This symbolizes that we are drawing to the darkest moment on Good Friday where the white candle representing Christ continues to glow.

But these are just symbols to help us visualize the agony that the Lord had to endure. We need to be reading the word daily. For this purpose the Diocese has produced a Devotional Book for Lent 2012 to help you walk with the Lord to the Cross. Begin today by reading his word daily in this season of Lent.

If you are unable to find a Devotional Book, please drop us a line with your address and we will see that you receive one.

Ash Wednesday Service- 2012

ashes to ashes

The Season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, the 7th Wednesday before Easter. This is commonly observed by the Roman Church, Anglicans and Lutherans. During Lent Christians are encouraged to fast, pray, give alms and seek repentance for their sins. Some Christians abstain from various foods.

We are reminded on Ash Wednesday that during Lent the focus should be the sacrifice of Christ and the mission of the Church. As the Lord established an annual day of repentance for the Israelites as in the Day of Atonement, (Lev 6), the church continues in the tradition of marking ash crosses on the foreheads of the faithful on Ash Wednesday as we remember that we will return “Dust to dust, ashes to ashes”

Come worship with us

Why Christians Celebrate Good Friday

Jesus my Redeemer

Good Friday is the day that Jesus died on the cross, and then two days later, He had risen from the dead! They celebrate it because it is the day they have a Saviour that still lives.

Good Friday is observed on the Friday before Easter Sunday. On this day Christians commemorate the passion, or suffering, and death on the cross of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

Many Christians spend this day in fasting, prayer, repentance, and meditation on the agony and suffering of Christ on the cross.

The biblical account of Jesus’ death on the cross, or crucifixion, his burial and his resurrection, or raising from the dead, can be found in the following passages of Scripture:

Matthew 27:27-28:8;

Mark 15:16-16:19;

Luke 23:26-24:35;

and John 19:16-20:30.

Lent Meeting 3

its me Elizabeth

It was Friday April 1st and the church gathered once again at the home of Jaccob and Sara Thomas to spend time reflecting in this season of Lent. Our speaker was Ms. Elizabeth Alfred. She shared on “Turning our Troubles into Triumph” speaking from Philippians 1 :12-14

After the message groups discussed what our response would be in the midst of  persecution on the church. All were encouraged to stand firm in the Lord in the same way as He walked to the cross at Calvary.
